KNOW BEFORE YOU GO
Casa Amaranta is one of three independent villas, set in a quiet residential area in the heart of the Chianti Classico wine region, on the edge of the pretty town of Greve in Chianti. Greve is the perfect town to stroll into, with its famous arcaded Piazza where you can sit at the pavement cafe's with a coffee and fresh pastry, a number of excellent restaurants, and a good range of shops and cantina's to explore!
The location of Casa Amaranta will appeal to those who want to holiday in the Chianti region without having to rely on a car to get to shops and restaurants. There is a frequent bus service from the town through to the Chianti towns of Castellina and Radda, as well as to Florence and Siena. The situation of the villa, on the side of a hill, provides views over the rooftops onto the ancient Tuscan landscape dotted with vineyards and olive groves and some great country walks into the hills that rise from the doorstep.
Greve in Chianti is one of the key Chianti wine towns. Of medieval origin, it is situated about halfway between Florence and Siena and is an ideal base from which to explore the Chianti region and some of the most historical and culturally important towns of Tuscany. The town itself is lively with regular events, including food and wine festivals where music and markets intermingle all year round. In the heart of the old part of Greve, is a 15th century Franciscan monastery and the triangular shaped main 'square', Piazza Matteotti, where every Saturday morning the weekly market still serves the nearby castle communities and hamlets, as it has done since the 13th century. Piazza Matteotti is also fronted by the portico on three sides that continues to serve as the frame for artisan shops, workshops and restaurants selling local products.
Just 1km west of Greve in Chianti is the ancient village of Montefioralle, the Castle of Montefioralle being used by the people of Greve during times of unrest. Now, beautifully restored and with its old octagonal walls intact, the old tower houses and the two Romanesque Churches, San Stefano and San Michele, make the small village a delight to visit.
Travelling south from Greve in Chianti you reach the charming hilltop village of Castellina in Chianti. For centuries, this village was fortified by Florence as an outpost in their war against Siena until Siena fell in 1555 and both cities lost interest in Castellina. Today, the old circuit of walls are almost intact as is the fortress in the centre along with the long covered walkway. Greve, along with Castellina and many others of the historical Chianti towns that lie between Florence and Siena, as well as the famous sweep of vineyards make the Chianti region a wonderful place to stay in or visit.
