The area combines great natural beauty (Lake Trasimeno is about 20 minutes drive away) with a wealth of historical remains and artifacts - Etruscan, Roman and mediaeval. Cortona's ancient walls and winding streets have resisted the ravages of modern development, making it an exquisite Tuscan gem and, with several excellent restaurants, a delightful place to stroll up to in the evenings
