The old medieval village of Orciatico, in the Commune of Lajatico (Pisa), was in the past a langobard castle, part of the defence system protecting the western part of Tuscany. Just one such village affording spectacular views of the archetypal Tuscan landscape. From this point the main art towns of Tuscany, Florence, Pisa and Lucca are all within easy reach. Under an hours drive will take you to Siena, which rivals Florence in musical, artistic and historic interest, while outdoing it with the Palio in July and again in August. Colle di Val d'Elsa, birthplace of Arnlfo di Cambrio who built the Palazzo Vecchio in Florence, is worth a visit, it has a fine medieval centro storico and is also noted for some of Italy's finest crystal.
