Historians believe that Castello di Casigliano was one of the gifts Emperor Otto I made to Arnolfo in 980 A.D. Destroyed first by the Barbarians and then by the Ghibellini, the present building dates back to 1519 when it was handed over to Ludvico Atti as a reward for his loyal services to the Holy See as General of the Pope's army. The Castle of Casigliano was designed by Sangallo the Younger and was often used as a residence for the Popes. In 1605 it was bought by Prince Corsini of Florence, and his heirs still own the property today. Castello di Casigliano Country In, set in a small medieval village, today has been brought back to life after many centuries. It offers, besides its natural charm, refined hospitalilty and a cuisine that skilfully conjures up traditional flavours, and shows a time-honoured respect for natural products. Because of its unique character and charm, and its proximity to the main Umbrian towns it is an ideal place for a romantic encounter, for business people looking for a convenient place to stay, and for the wandering tourist. For wedding ceremonies, gala dinners, and as a location for film sets, the Castle fits all occasions to perfection. The apartments within the castle walls are offered for either bed and breakfast, half-board, full-board or self-catering purposes. The garden grounds are set out with garden furniture where you can sit out and admire the views. A local hotel (2km) provides use of its swimming pool for Casigliano guests. A cosy restaurant is connected to the Castle by a charming underground tunnel that passes under the village square, joining the old wine-making cellars to the country house. In these rooms today, you can delight in a myriad of flavours from times gone by, accompanied by refined wines which, in the summer, can be sipped on the terrace, while enjoying the splendid view of the Umbrian hills. Typical dishes at the Inn include: Strongozzi alla Spoletina: Tagliolini with Cheese, Black Pepper and Truffles: Gnocchetti with Duck: Barbecued Lamb Chops: Sliced Beef with Rosemary: Roast Suckling-pig.
