Set in a wonderful Tuscan landscape, the 15th century villa of Petrognano was the summer palace of the Bishops of Fiesole until the present owner's family bought it in the 1890's. The estate stands in its own woodlands in the peaceful region of Pomino, famous for its wine and olive oil, and just 30km from Florence. Surrounding the villa and dotted over the estate are several large farmhouses which have now been converted for holiday use. These houses have been developed to retain all the character of the original buildings and, in keeping with their origins, are styled and furnished very simply.
Excellent wine and olive oil are produced on the estate. The estate has the added advantage of its own small country Inn, Praticino, with a good restaurant and bed & breakfast facilities with seven double or twin bedrooms. The restaurant's food is traditional and authentic focusing on seasonal produce and good quality ingredients. Here, after a stroll across fields, you can enjoy traditional local dishes and a glass or two of wine while admiring the views from the vast terrace that overlooks a valley of vine yards and olive groves.
It is as pretty here in the autumn and spring as it is in the summer months and since Petrognano is on the route to the Passa di Consuma, it is also a pleasant place to stay for Chritmas or later, with the possibility of skiing.
The estates swimming pool is discreetly placed below the Inn so that it shares in the lovely view without otherwise encroaching on it. The pool is for the use of guests of the farmhouses and B&B only. A conveniently sited tennis court is also available to guests and is situated on a terrace just below the swimming pool.
The houses here are rustic and simply furnished, making Petrognano ideal for those who love the idea of a simple and authentic way of life in a beautiful country setting.
Accommodation
The restoration completed here has resulted in a very spacious apartment. Ground floor: A large room is divided by archways into three areas: Sitting area, large dining area with fireplace and seating, kitchen with cooker (oven and hob) and fridge/freezer. The original beams and shutters, fine terracotta tiles, and the stone of the fireplace and archways, all create harmony throughout. An open wooden staircase leads up to the first floor: Three double bedrooms. Twin bedroom. Two bathrooms with showers. The house opens onto the villa's south-facing terrace and garden.Grounds
