In this neighbourhood there seems once to have been located a temple for the old Roman god Janus, the two faced god of gates and doorways, whose festival month was January. The name of the house comes from the Italian Giano, or in local dialect Sciano. The diminuitive is Scianetto.
The charm of this relatively unknown area, with its olive groves and vineyards and its proximity to the medieval and renaissance delights of Italy, makes it a wonderful place for a perfectly relaxing and cultural holiday. In this idyllic location you are within easy reach of the hill towns of Etruria, Umbria and southern Tuscany. Within about a half hours drive are the Sanctuary of Vescovio, the Abbey of Farfa, the Church of S. Andrea in Flumine and the Church of S.Elia (Nepi). The natural reserves of Tevere-Farfa, Monte Soratte, Monte Rufeno, Selva dell'Amone and the WWF Oasis of Pian S. Angelo and Alviano with Monti Reatini are within easy reach and offer bird-watching opportunities and hiking. Other wonders for the interested and independent traveller include the Etruscan Necropolis around Viterbo, the Marmore Falls, the Monster park of Bomarzo, the cities of Viterbo (with its thermal baths), Tuscania and Civita di Bagnoreggio. The lakes of Bolsena, Vico, Martignano and Bracciano and the cities of Todi, Spoleto, Narni and Orvieto are about an hours drive. Also within easy reach for day trips are Perugia, Arezzo and Siena.
The train station at Collevecchio has a frequent service to Rome. Collevecchio, a fine medieval village in its own right, has shops, restaurant, bank, post office, pharmacy and supermarket market. There are many excellent traditional (and untouristy) restaurants located in this area, great food and they won't eat into your holiday funds too much.
Collevecchio also has a direct connection by train with the airport Leonardo da Vinci (1h 40m). The trip into Rome on the same train takes 1 hour. If you reserve in time you can also rent a car in Collevecchio.
Accommodation
Sciannetto is an elegant modern villa set into well tended mature terraced garden grounds with a furnished terrace on the 'middle' level and a narrow spiral staircase from this terrace to an upper level terrace with 360 degree panoramic views. The swimming pool is located in the garden below the house. The house and garden grounds are well screened and afford a lovely sense of privacy whilst from just about everywhere are lovely views over the Sabina countryside. Entrance is through a gated driveway to the house.
Main house: Hallway to elegantly furnished living room with windows to front and rear. Contemporary style open fireplace. Double bedroom. Twin bedroom. Bathroom - good quality bathroom with shower. Fitted kitchen with electric oven and hob 4 x gas and 1 x electric ring, fridge/freezer, dishwasher, microwave. From the kitchen doors lead out onto a wide furnished terrace that overlooks the pool and the views. From the terrace you have access to a single bedroom with bathroom with shower.
Basement: At basement level and accessed externally is a spacious studio with double sofa bed. There are two steps up into a little kitchenette with 2 ring hob and fridge. At the rear of the main living/bed area is an ante room with double wardrobe that then leads to the bathroom with shower.
Also at basement level and accessed externally is a large laundry room with washing machine and large fridge for cooling copious quantities of deliciously crisp dry white wine.
Two cats have access to the basement with cat flap and are cared for by the house keeper. The spiral staircase to upper terrace is particularly narrow and anyone of a ‘size’ may find it a bit of a squeeze...
Grounds
A wide furnished terrace acts as an extension to the house and provides an ideal place for alfresco dining. The swimming pool is situated on a lower garden terrace with steps down from the upper garden and house. A wide furnished terrace also surrounds the pool. Mature garden grounds surround the house and are well stocked with a variety of shrubs and plants.
